Biotechnology Seed Case is Heard By the U.S. Supreme Court
February 22, 2013
A lawsuit between an Indiana farmer and a biotech seed company has reached the U.S. Supreme Court. Biotech seed companies protect their intellectual property rights by obtaining patents. Farmers wishing to use bioengineered seeds must sign a contract with the owner of the patent outlining how the seed is to be used. The current case will determine if biotech seed companies can limit their seed use to a single crop and outlaw next generation seed use. Farm groups and biotech critics believe that the patent system gives too much power to biotech seed companies.
