World Agricultural Subsidies Decreasing

September 26, 2012

A new OECD report shows that the amount of government support for agriculture is decreasing. In a comparison done between two time-periods, 1995 – 1997 and 2009 – 2011, almost all countries showed a decrease in the amount of government support for agriculture. That being said, the degree of decrease does vary widely between countries. Government support for agriculture in the mostly rich countries of the OECD amounted to $252 billion in 2011, or about 19% of total farm receipts. There is also a move away from support linked directly to production. However, the report found that support that distorts production and trade still represents about half of the total.
