FSMA Proposed Rules on Harvesting and Manufacturing
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has republished its new proposed rules for the Food Safety Modernization Act correcting several issues from the original publishing on January 16, 2013. The corrections include typographical errors, stylistic errors and some wrong dates for references.

Reopening the Comment Period on the Qualitative Risk Assessment

FSMA Rules Comment Period Extended for Information Collection
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a request to extend the comment period for information collection for the proposed Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules on good manufacturing and growing to May 16, 2013.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has scheduled several public meetings to discuss its recently proposed rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act.
The first meeting will be February 28, 2013 in Washington, D.C. Two succeeding meetings will be held in Chicago, IL on March 11, 2013 and in Portland, OR on March 18, 2013.

Food Safety Modernization Act
UPDATE - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed two new rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The two rules deal with the growing and processing sides of food production. Along with the two proposed rules, the FDA also released a Draft Qualitative Risk Assessment, which it used to draft the proposed processing rule.

FDA Proposes New Food Safety Rules
Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed to establish science-based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce, meaning fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption.

Draft Qualitative Risk Assessment
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the availability of, and is requesting comment on, its “Draft Qualitative Risk Assessment of Risk of Activity/Food Combinations for Activities (Outside the Farm Definition) Conducted in a Facility Co-Located on a Farm.” The purpose of this draft document is to provide science-based risk analysis of those activity/food combinations that would be considered low risk.
