Farm Bill Priorities Receive Endorsement from Senators
Yesterday, the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance (SCFBA) applauded the signing by 32 senators calling for a 2012 Farm Bill. In the letter, which was addressed to Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Ranking Member Pat Roberts (R-KS), the signatories highlighted the benefits that 2008 Farm Bill brought to the specialty crop industry, and noted the significant benefits that consumers, producers, and farm communities received from these programs.

Enhance Non-traditional Community Agricultural Production and Technology
On October 14, 2011, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) introduced H.R. 3225, a bill to promote and enhance non-traditional community agricultural production and technology through the establishment of a new office in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The bill, which has six cosponsors, aims to ensure that USDA authorities are able to effectively coordinate and encourage local agriculture growth and foster an environment to increase the availability of fresh food in non-traditional communities.

On Thursday, September 15, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Senator John Thune (R-ND) introduced S. 1561, a bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. This bill, as intended by its authors, is aimed at fostering a collaborative environment between universities and private charitable entities to increase and develop advancements in food production. On Friday, September 16th, Representative Devin Nunes (R-CA) introduced H.R. 2959, a bill to amend the tax code and allow for private charitable tax-exempt organization to fund agricultural research. The purpose of this bill is to create a hybrid partnership between universities and private entities to spur research and innovation that will enable the United States to double food production by 2050.
